He believes that the three leaders must step aside until investigations into the allegations at the EC are done.

Some “concerned staff” at the commission petitioned the president last week to remove the Chairperson, Charlotte Osei over claims that she had engaged in some fraudulent activities.

Among some of the things listed were that she “single-handedly” dished out contracts to the tune of $21,999,592 without recourse to the Public Procurement Act. She was also accused of spending over GHS4 million on her residence.

Madam Osei has since denied the claims made by the petitioners.

She further accused her deputies of gross insubordination, corruption, and arrogance. They are: Deputy in Charge of Operations, Amadu Sulley, Corporate Services, Georgina Opoku Amankwaa; and Finance and Administration, Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah.

Many believe that these backs and forth so far between the EC boss and her petitioners are clearly an attack on the integrity of the EC as presently constituted.

The petition has, however, been referred by the president to the Chief Justice who shall conduct a preliminary investigation and decide whether there is a prima facie case to continue with the impeachment of the Chairperson of the Commission.

But even before the investigations, the three Commissioners have been summoned by Parliament to attempt finding a solution to the matter as criminal investigations continue at the Economic and Organised Crime Office.

Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu is part of the leaders of Parliament meeting the three leaders at the Commission, and he believes that the three must step aside for now.

“When I contributed to the affairs of the EC in March, I said that looking at the signs on the wall I thought that the issue was salvageable, if we had people sit down with them and deal with it. But now given where we have travelled to I think we should allow an in-depth inquiry into the conduct of business at the EC,” he told Accra-based Joy FM.

“Given the heat that the three of them have succeeded in generating, I think it will be better if they step aside for a proper investigation to be conducted.

“Who knows at the end of the day it will be much ado about nothing and they get back to work again,” he stated.
