Supporters of two claimants to the Osu Traditional Area stool have clashed at this year’s Homowo Festival at Osu in Accra.

Custom demands that the Osu chief sprinkle the traditional food otherwise known as “kpokpoi” through the principal streets of the area.

But on Tuesday, the two leaders who have been contesting the stool - Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI and Nii Nortey Owuo had to sprinkle the food separately.

Confusion occurred when Nii Okwei Kinka VI, who is also the President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, sprinkled “kpokpoi” through the Osu Ashante streets. This appears to be the same street his rival chief, Nii Nortey Owuo had also gone to sprinkle the traditional food.

This did not go down well with the supporters of both leaders, as they began exchanging words and throwing stones at each other.

The police who were already at the scene were compelled to fire warning shots to disperse the supporters.

The two leaders subsequently had to take turns to sprinkle the traditional food.
