When NPP team met the Black Stars

The Nana Akufo-Addo-led government has declared its intention of championing the Black stars course of ending a 34-year-old trophy drought after meeting with players and technical team ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations slated for Gabon this month

The President-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, called for a meeting with Ghana FA officials, the technical and playing bodies of the Black Stars at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Sunday.

The newly elected president, who failed to attend the meeting, sent his spokesperson Mustapha Hamid and Hon Isaac Asiamah, parliamentary select Committee chairman for sports, to represent him.

Players including Jonathan Mensah, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu, Godsway Donyoh, Afriyie Acquah, Abdul Majeed Waris, Ebenezer Assifuah were present.

According to Mustapha Hamid, the president elect wishes the team the best of luck as they chase their first AFCON title in 34 years. “The president asked us to come and represent him and to first of all convey his apology for not making it here and also his good wishes to you for a successful tournament.”

Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi stated that the Black stars can make Ghana proud if government backs them with the needed financial support.   "We will need the support of government to help the team financially and we hope that this particular team will make Ghana proud at the tournament," the GFA Boss said.

Stand-in Black Stars captain Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu says his teammates are determined to win the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations to make the president-elect proud.

''We want to congratulate the president-elect for the wonderful job he has done throughout the year and being elected next president of the the republic of Ghana,'' he said.

"Secondly, the team is poised for action when the tournament starts on the 14th of January. We started our training three days ago and so far there's no injury in camp, everything is going on well.

The Black Stars are scheduled to leave Accra on Monday after head coach Avram Grant has named his 23-man squad for the tournament.

They will camp in UAE for 11 days before flying over to Gabon for their Group D matches against Uganda, Egypt and Mali.
