The decision by Dr. Karl Arhin to step aside follows allegations by Pressure group, Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) that the steering committee is biased towards the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), and thus must be dissolved.
A statement issued on Tuesday February 16 and signed by convenor David Asante, said it was “worried about the bizarre manner that the Charlotte-Osei-led Electoral Commission is preparing towards this year's general elections”.
"This latest move, to the LMVCA’s disappointment, only adds to a sequence of actions that shows that the EC, in its preparation towards the 2016 general elections, is not really interested in holding a non-partisan, professional and efficient line for delivering on its constitutional mandate. The so-called Steering Committee is populated by NDC people. It is an NDC-biased Steering Committee," the statement added.
Meanwhile, the appointment of Francis Azumah of the Peace Council is also being questioned by the LMVCA.
According to the group, Francis Azumah is believed to have lobbied for the position of DCE in Builsa.
The 18-member committee was inaugurated on the 8th February 2016 and is chaired by the EC boss, Charlotte Osei with members from various state institutions including the Ghana Police Service and the Prisons service.
