Police picket at EC despite court injunction on LMVCA

Despite the Greater Accra Regional Police Command securing a court injunction restraining pressure group Let My Votes Count Alliance from picketing at the premises of the Electoral Commission, the police have laid siege to prevent any attempt from the group from demonstrating to defy the court order.

Some police officers were also spotted at the Obra spot to beef up security to prevent the pro-opposition group from protesting.

A Circuit Court earlier Monday declared that a restraining order obtained by the police against the planned picket at the vicinity of the Electoral Commission Tuesday, September 29, 2015 had run its course.

This comes on the back of plans by theLMVCA'sdecision to stage a second demonstration to press home demands for a new Voter's Register for the 2016 elections, after an audit conducted by the New Patriotic Partyallegedly revealed names of foreigners from neighbouring countries in the register.

The Alliance staged a similar demonstration on Wednesday, September 16, 2015, which ended up in a bloody confrontation with the police, leaving scores injured, one person dead and another losing his eyesight, when the police tried preventing the group of demonstrators from entering the premises of the EC to picket.

The police after acquiring the injunction said it will not allow the group to picket at the premises of the Electoral Commission on September29.

Meanwhile, the Convener for the pro-opposition group, Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), David Asante, has accused the Police of allowing themselves to be manipulated by political actors, to frustrate their attempts to picket at the offices of the Electoral Commission (EC).
