Can Aduana Stars break Algerian clubs jinx?

No Ghanaian club has managed to knock out an Algerian opposition from the elite African inter club competition.

In 5 different elimination encounters that Ghanaian clubs over the years have had with clubs from Algeria in the Champions Cup now the Champions League, no side has ever finished the home and away ties smiling.

Asante Kotoko are the worst culprits, having been knocked out on four occasions and Ashgold have been eliminated ones. Kotoko in 1990 against JS Kabylie, 2004 against USM Alger, 2013 against JSM Bejaia, despite achieving an unprecedented feat in the first leg by leaving Algeria as the first Ghanaian club to avoid defeat in Algeria after a goalless draw and in 2015 El Eulma tore the hearts of the Kumasi fans apart by coming from a goal down to snatch a late victory to become the first North African side to beat Kotoko in Ghana in any African Inter Club Competitions.

Ashgold in 2008 were walloped 3-0 in Algeria by JS Kabylie and drew at home to go out of the CAF Champions League. Coincidentally all the Ghanaian clubs that have played against Algerian oppositions in the CAF Champions League or its equivalent the Africa Club Champions Cup are clubs from the Ashanti region.

In All African Inter Club Competitions Ghanaian clubs have met Algerian sides in 11 knockout games and Accra Hearts of Oak remain the only side that avoided elimination against a side from Algeria. That was in 1982 Cup Winners Cup: Hearts of Oak lost the away encounter 2-1 and won the home tie 2-0 against USK Algiers. Clubs like Ghapoha, Wise, Hearts of Oak in 1993 and 1995, Kotoko, Ashgold have all fallen victim to Algerian elimination before.

AshGold were booted out of the CAF Champions League by M.O Bejaia after the Algerian overturned a 1-0 first leg defeat to progress 3-2 on aggregate.

And just last year Aduana Star's Brong Ahafo neighbours, Bechem United had early showers of the CAF Confederation Cup as they suffered a 5-2 elimination against MC Alger

Aduana Stars have been presented with an opportunity to avenge the defeat they suffered to JS Kabylie in 2008 and also become the first Ghanaian side to knock out a club from Algeria in the CAF Champions/Africa Club Champions Cup as they face them on Sun 14 February at the Obuasi Len Clay Sports Stadium.
