Christian Atsu features in Newcastle United final preseason

The Magpies lost by a goal to nil ahead of their English Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspurs next week.

Atsu looked quite lively. Had a goal bound shot well saved by their goalkeeper in the first half and put in a great cross in the second half which Newcastle United should’ve made more of.

The first attack of the game arrived in the second minute when Ritchie crossed from the right but Joselu couldn’t connect.

A Ritchie free-kick caused danger for the Bundesliga side when he whipped in a free-kick from the right-hand side before Ciaran Clark’s goal-bound header was hacked clear by the visitors.

Two minutes later Ayoze Perez had a chance in the box but his shot was palmed away by Andreas Luthe.

Luthe saved well again on 22 minutes when Ritchie struck an effort from long range but the keeper pushed it away from danger.

Ritchie then released Christian Atsu four minutes later yet Luthe blocked his low shot and Augsburg survived once more.

There was an earlier than expected debut for Ki Sung-yueng after 27 minutes when he replaced Mo Diame who appeared to come off with a strain.

Newcastle created plenty of first half chances but could not convert and the two sides went in level at the break.

After wasting so many chances earlier, the visitors found themselves in front just after the hour mark.

A ball into the six-yard area found Michael Gregoritsch at the back post who then sent a diving header past Karl Darlow.

Moments later, Gregoritsch forced Darlow to save with his legs as Augsburg almost doubled their lead.
