Essien backs Thomas Partey for Black Stars captaincy

The 25-year-old has become a key player for four-time Africa champions since making his debut for the side against Mauritius in 2016.

The veteran midfielder believes his young compatriot has what it takes to lead the national team as captain.

Partey has been one of the most consistent Ghanaian players in recent years, having risen to become a key member of the Atletico Madrid team.

The 26-year-old has also been very important for the Black Stars, and emerged as Ghana’s top scorer during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Essien – who recently announced his international retirement – believes Partey will be a good fit as Black Stars captain.

According to him, Partey has the traits of a leader and has therefore backed the Atletico Madrid anchorman for the Black Stars captaincy.

“There are good players in the team but I think Partey is doing great and he can lead the team,” Essien told TV3.

“He is doing wonderful with his Club and the National team as well, he captained the team on a few occasions and I think he will be a good leader.”
