The West African Football Academy (WAFA) have withdrawn from Ghana’s Division One League to focus on developing young talents.

WAFA follow Liberty Professionals in withdrawing from Division One League

They’re the second Ghanaian club to withdraw from the second-tier competition this year after Liberty Professionals did the same two months ago.

A statement from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) acknowledged WAFA’s withdrawal and said the Executive Committee will soon find a team to replace them.

“West African Football Academy Sporting Club (WAFA SC) has officially sent a written notification to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to inform the Association of the decision of the club to withdraw from the Access Bank Division One League,” the GFA said.

“The club, among other reasons, explained the current change of policy direction to fully focus on developing young football talents through the academy system in the Volta Region of Ghana.”

The statement added: “The Executive Council of GFA in the coming days will exercise its power under Article 78 of the GFA Statutes to find a replacement for WAFA in the Access Bank Division One League, Zone 2 in light of the established precedents.

“All stakeholders and clubs in the Division One League Zone 2 are to take note of the withdrawal of WAFA SC.”

For six years, WAFA competed and excelled in the Ghana Premier League, as well as serving as a model club for talent development.

However, the Sogakope-based side was relegated in the 2021/22 season following a miserable campaign.

Meanwhile, in June, Liberty Professionals also announced that the club was returning to its roots as an academy and will no longer compete in the Division One League, although it will still be in the Ghana football pyramid.
