The West Africans booked their place in the play-off round following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa at the Cape Coast stadium.
Ayew was the match-winner after expertly converting a first-half penalty after Daniel Amartey was fouled in the box.
The decision to award the penalty has, however, divided opinions, with many South Africans accusing the referee of cheating them.
Addressing the media in the aftermath of the game, the Black Stars captain said the penalty was the right call.
“It was a clear penalty on [Amartey]. In fact, we had chances to get more penalties and should have been given two more,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Ayew marked his 100th international appearance during Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against South Africa.
The 31-year-old now joins Asamoah Gyan as the only two players who have played a century of matches for the Ghana national team.
The former Swansea City and West Ham man has scored 22 goals for the national team since making his debut in 2007.
He is also currently Ghana highest scorer in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with nine goals.
