Arteta hails Martinelli after bringing down 'top team' Liverpool

Martinelli won the Man of the Match award against Liverpool after bagging a goal and an assist

Martinelli was the star of the match as Arsenal defeated Liverpool to stay top pf the Premier League table

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has praised Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli for his performance against Liverpool in Sunday's Premier League clash.

Arsenal welcomed Liverpool to the Emirates Stadium as they aimed to return to the top of the table while Liverpool looked to revive an average season so far.

Martinelli's goal and a brace from England international Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal the edge in a 3-2 victory after Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino drew Liverpool level twice in the game.

In the aftermath of the match, Arteta agreed that Martinelli is now proving himself to be amongst the best players in the Premier League.

In his post-match press conference as reported by Football London, the Spanish tactician explained that Martinelli's performance against Liverpool showed that the Brazilian forward can step up in the big games.

Arteta said: "I think today he had an outstanding performance against a top defender and a top team and he made a difference in the game as well as the other players.

"That’s the next level, to step up to games in these games and make things happen to win it."

The 21-year-old forward joined Arsenal in July 2019 on a five-year deal from Brazilian second-division side Ituano, and with his current contract set to expire in June 2024, talks of renewal have been rumoured.

However, Arteta believes that with or without scoring goals, Martinelli's hunger and determination are enough qualities to earn the Brazilian forward a new contract at the London club.

"Gabby doesn’t have to show me whether he plays well or not well today what he deserves. What is clear is his hunger, his determination and his love for this game," Arteta explained.

Arsenal will continue their push for a Premier League title when they play Leeds United away at Elland Road on Sunday, October 16.
