Hohoe United pulls out of Ghana Premier League with 7 games to end the season
Hohoe United have made a dramatic decision to withdraw from the Ghana Premier League with just seven matches left in the season.
The move, confirmed on April 1 following an emergency meeting between the club’s board and management, brings an abrupt end to what had been their historic debut campaign in the top flight.
At the time of their withdrawal, Hohoe United were battling relegation, sitting in the drop zone with 30 points from 27 matches.
Despite the difficult position, club officials argue that their struggles have been worsened by several external factors.
Central to their concerns is what they describe as a harsh and ill-timed disciplinary sanction, alongside ongoing frustrations with officiating and overall match management.
A key issue is the three-match home ban imposed on the club after failing to provide adequate security during an earlier incident at the Hohoe Sports Stadium. Club officials have strongly criticised the timing of the punishment, noting that it comes at a decisive stage of the season when every point is crucial.
Their concerns are supported by performance data. Of the 30 points accumulated this season, 20 were secured on home soil, underlining the importance of their home advantage. The ban has effectively stripped them of this edge during a critical period.
As a result, Hohoe United were scheduled to play only one of their final seven fixtures at home, with the remaining six matches taking place away — including games in which they would nominally be the home side but forced to use alternative venues.
The club believes this significantly undermined their survival chances.
Additionally, Hohoe United have raised concerns about inconsistent refereeing decisions and the general handling of their matches throughout the campaign, further fueling their dissatisfaction during a challenging debut season.
Reports indicate that the club has yet to officially notify the Ghana Football Association of its decision.
Should the withdrawal be formalised, Hohoe United could face further sanctions in line with league regulations.
The development has ignited broader discussions around the timing of disciplinary measures, refereeing standards, and competitive fairness within the league.
