Sunil Chhetri scored twice for India at the Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi to leave Thailand rooted to the foot of Group A with games against Bahrain and host nation the United Arab Emirates still to come.

The Football Association of Thailand announced the Serbian’s dismissal via its official social media outlets, adding that former assistant coach Sirisak Yodyardthai would assume control of the team for the clash with Bahrain on Thursday.

“The result [against India] is not what is expected of the Thai national team and that our supporters deserve,” Football Association of Thailand President Somyot Poompanmoung said in the announcement.

“Like all Thai football fans across the country, I am also disappointed with the result. But as the President of the Football Association, I cannot stand still with this problem,” he added.

Rajevac took charge of Thailand in 2017 after spells with both Qatar and Algeria.

The Serbian also famously guided Ghana to the last eight of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
