The Minister was speaking to Kwese Free Sports on the year in review, which saw him and substantive Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah mark one year at the helm of affairs since being appointed.

Pius Hadzide first stated that that his administration came to meet the ministry facing some huge debt and this was one of the causes of the stadium's poor state.

“The situation we came to meet was so dire and that hindered from going on with a few things we wanted to do in our first year," he said.

"For instance, the debt situation alone at the ministry was precarious. We met a debt of about 50 million Gh cedis. This could be attributed to the fact that the Accra Sports Stadium had not had electricity over two years before we assumed office.” “The state of disrepair of the Accra Sports was a shame.”

He also spoke on the fact that the previous government looked on for the Stadium to reach its current state before they came into office.

"We have cited documentation that Architectural & Engineering Services Limited on several occasions had indicated to the previous administration that there was the need to do anti-rust painting.

"The reasons being the stadium is made largely of steal and close by the sea so salinity levels in the atmosphere are high but the previous government paid no heed."

Pius Enam Hadzide stated that the Sports Minster Isaac Asiamah took a tour of the facility when he came first into office and was alarmed at the state of disrepair sections of the stadium had gone through. He also stated the current administration has got a contractor

“We went on a tour of the facility and we were all alarmed on the state of disrepair”. “We had to partially close down sections of the stadium and we had to go out of our way to look for special funding”. I am glad at this point we are almost about signing an agreement with a contractor to take over the renovation.”

Ghana is set to host the 2018 African Women Cup of Nations in which the Accra Sports Stadium has been earmarked as one of the venues.
