Al Ahly coach Rene Weiler in talks to become next Ghana coach

Al Ahly coach, Rene Weiler has held talks with Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku over the prospect of becoming their next head coach.

The local football governing body removed all its national team coaches, at all levels of the game.

The announcement was made late on Thursday evening and sees the end of Kwesi Appiah's second stint in charge of the senior men's national team.

And the Swiss trainer could now be set to take his first senior managerial job should he accept Ghana's offer.

Weiler has coached his fair share of clubs in Europe mainly in Switzerland, Germany, and Belgium including Swiss sides FC Aarau and FC Luzern, as well as German club FC Nuremberg.

However, his most successful stint was with Belgian giants RSC Anderlecht whom he led to 36 wins, 16 draws and just 14 losses in his 66 games in charge.

In addition, he was also able to lift the Belgian league title, the Belgian Super Cup and had an impressive Europa League run, where they lost to Manchester United in the quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate.

Weiler is also no strange to Ghanaian players, having coached current Tianjin Teda winger Frank Acheampong during their time together at Anderlecht.

The Ghana FA is expected to announce the new head coach for the Black Stars before March this year when the qualifiers of the 2022 FIFA World Cup start on the continent.
