Sixth seed Ostapenko is ranked some 40 places above her Croatian opponent, but Konjuh won their first professional encounter in Texas this year.

And the world number 77 had Ostapenko's number again, albeit this time she had to show her fighting spirit to earn a 5-7 6-2 6-1 victory.

Ostapenko was the only seed in action in day one, but there were two mini upsets for wildcards as Katerina Siniakova defeated world number 49 Alize Cornet 7-6 (7-5) 6-3, and Jana Cepelova was a 7-6 (9-7) 7-5 victor over Margarita Gasparyan.

In other matches, American Madison Brengle eased past Naomi Broady 6-2 6-0, while Hsieh Su-wei needed three sets for a 4-6 6-3 6-1 triumph against Kristyna Pliskova.
