The 2016 Australian Open champion was seeded second for the WTA Premier competition on clay in Spain's capital, with world number one Serena Williams having withdrawn due to illness.

Kerber came into the tournament in good form following a victory over Laura Siegemund last Sunday to successfully defend her Stuttgart Open title.

However, the world number three was unable to carry that momentum to Madrid.

Kerber saved two break points but was unable to stop Strycova from claiming the first set.

The world number 33 picked up an early break in the second and did not look back from there, seeing out a 6-4 6-2 victory by claiming the first match point available to her.
