Anita Wlodarczyk beat the classic bunch of flowers and a card as she dedicated a new world record in the women's hammer throw to her mother on her birthday.

Wlodarczyk took Olympic gold on Monday, throwing 82.29 metres to break the existing benchmark - which she had also set - by over a metre.

The Pole was silver medallist in London four years ago and described her "explosion of happiness" at going one better in Rio.

"It's the world record and I believed I could get the gold medal but wasn't sure about the world record," she said.

"Before the third throw I felt the power and knew it would be the best moment. After many years of hard work I'm on top. I do believe my record will be in my hands for the next 20 years.

"It was extremely hard conditions and mega hot. I had to use cold water on my head throughout the competition. This result is fantastic in these conditions.

"After the world record I felt an explosion of happiness. But now I'm extremely tired. This day is the best day of my life and I still fight to improve my result. "It is amazing that there were so many fans during the hammer throw. It was my mum's birthday today so it is such a gift that she is here today."
