Nick Kyrgios' maiden ATP Tour title came as a surprise to the Australian, who had taken time off in the lead-up to the Open 13.

The Australian proved too strong for Marin Cilic in the final in Marseille on Sunday, winning 6-2 7-6 (7-3) after putting on a nerveless display of serving.

And the 20-year-old, who reached the Estoril Open final last year, was pleased to finally get his name etched on some silverware.

"I think I served really, really well again," said Kyrgios, who had two weeks out to recover from an elbow injury.

"I played my first final last year and was looking for my first title.

"I didn't really expect to win this title this week after having a couple of weeks off, but from the first round I started playing really well and just gained confidence as I kept winning matches."
