Australia and England starting from scratch - Cheika

Australia coach Michael Cheika believes his side's Rugby World Cup victory over England will have no influence on proceedings when the teams meet for a three-Test series this month.

England were embarrassingly eliminated from the World Cup on home soil last year, defeats to Wales and Australia sealing the fate of Stuart Lancaster's men before their final group game.

However, the appointment of former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones has initially reaped rewards, with England completing an impressive Grand Slam in the 2016 Six Nations.

"Everything starts at zero again," Cheika told the Telegraph when asked if the countries' last meeting could have an impact on England's tour of Australia.

"You have got to continually re-earn things. Everything we have done in in the past we have to re-earn and even better."

Cheika was impressed with what he saw from England during the Six Nations and highlighted rising star Maro Itoje as a dangerman for Australia.

"When I saw them playing in the Six Nations, they were looking big and confident. They were in the faces of the opposition. They looked like they were taller. That’s an ominous sign," Cheika added.

"Obviously Itoje is a stand-out player. There's a young guy who is playing phenomenally well. He seems to really belong there.

"Young guys add that bit of freshness to the squad but also I think [Dylan] Hartley coming back made a difference and a guy like James Haskell has been given a new lease of life in what he has to do."

The first Test between Australia and England takes place in Brisbane next Saturday.
