Australian Open: Federer almost wipes out chair ump, Serena welcomes Super Bowl

FED ATTACKS CHAIR UMPIRE

Federer went through a spell in the first set of his win over Tomas Berdych spraying his forehand.

So much so that chair umpire Carlos Bernardes was in the firing line.

The Swiss great reached for a wide Berdych serve and crunched his forehand just inches wide of the chair.

SERENA WELCOMES BRONCOS-PANTHERS SUPER BOWL

The NFL has been a regular topic of conversation at Melbourne Park and it was no different for world number one Serena Williams.

And that the Denver Broncos are facing the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 is no surprise to Williams.

"Vernon Davis is one of my friends. I was very happy to see him make it to his first Super Bowl. He plays for the Denver Broncos," she said.

"I'm not surprised. I feel like Cam Newton, they were almost undefeated in regular season, so it was kind of expected that the Carolina Panthers would make it to the Super Bowl.

"It will be really fun."

BERDYCH'S BALLSY BOMB

A linesperson was on the wrong end of a 195km/h Tomas Berdych fault in the Czech's loss to Federer.

He tried to avoid the huge serve but moved to his right and the ball followed him, hitting him in the groin.

CHALLENGE, CHALLENGE, CHALLENGE

Carla Suarez Navarro made 45 unforced errors in her straight-sets loss to Agnieszka Radwanska in their quarter-final.

The Spanish 10th seed, however, made a few challenge mistakes, too.

Suarez Navarro took her tally for wrong challenges to a tournament-high 11 with a few poor ones against Radwanska.

Of 15 challenges at the 2016 Australian Open, she got four right.
