A cramping Schwartzman was placed in a wheelchair before needing a stretcher to leave the court on a warm day, with temperatures around 27 degrees Celsius, in Melbourne.
Players had been on court for two hours, 45 minutes when Schwartzman had to lay down at the back of the court in pain.
His retirement was confirmed soon after, leading to cheering from the vocal home crowd.
Millman walked around the net to check on Schwartzman's condition before the latter was taken from the court.
