McCullum, who scored a record-breaking 54-ball century on the opening day, was dismissed for 25 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Monday.
The veteran had just hit Josh Hazlewood for six when he fell next ball attempting to attack once again, caught brilliantly by a diving David Warner at mid-wicket.
McCullum was given a standing ovation as he walked off after being dismissed for the final time.
With his wicket, New Zealand were left struggling at 105-4 in their second innings – still trailing Australia.
