After Alberto Gallego was provisionally suspended by the UCI, Pro Continental team Caja Rural have cancelled the Spaniard's contract.

Alberto Gallego has had his contract with Caja Rural rescinded less than a month after joining the Pro Continental team following his provisional suspension by the UCI.

Gallego's ban was announced by cycling's governing body on Tuesday after returning a positive test for banned substance, the anabolic steroid Stanozolol.

The 25-year-old was tested three days into his first professional contract with Caja Rural having left the amateur world behind ahead of the new season, leading to the Spanish team ending his deal.

A statement read: "Caja Rural announce that the team has decided to terminate the contract of its rider Alberto Gallego after hearing about the anomalies found in the result of the anti-doping test taken on the January 3 2016.

"The decision is in accordance with the provisions in the current regulations and in compliance with the internal regulations of the team.

"The rider joined the team on January 1 2016 and has not participated in any races in the 2016 season.

"The team is disappointed by this news as it strives to participate in a clean sport."
