WTA: No evidence of Caroline Garcia "gypsy" comment

Caroline Garcia allegedly called Irina Camelia Begu a "gypsy" at the Charleston Open, but the WTA says the reports are groundless.

The WTA has found no evidence to support allegations that Caroline Garcia called Irina-Camelia Begu a "gypsy" during their match at the Charleston Open on Monday.

Garcia reportedly made the remark during her first-round meeting with Romanian Begu, which she lost 6-4 2-6 7-6 (7-3).

Begu wrote in a Facebook post she had not heard such comments during the match, and a WTA investigation did not find anything to back up the reports.

WTA chief executive Steve Simon said in a statement: "The highest level of professional conduct on court is paramount to the WTA and anything less is unacceptable.

"After thorough investigation, we have found no evidence to support these allegations. This matter is closed."
