Disabled persons call off demonstration
The Federation of Persons with Disability has called off the intended nationwide demonstration supposed to have been embarked upon by its members today, Friday, August 25, to protest against the delay in releasing the share of the common fund allocated to them by the constitution.
The announcement to rescind the decision to embark on the protest was made after the leadership of the federation’s engagement with the Common fund administrator, Naa Torshie Addo.
The delay in the release of the 2% share of the common fund came about when the fund administrator initiated compilation of a register ostensibly to make the fund accessible to all beneficiaries.
However, earlier this week, the Ashanti regional president of the disabled persons lamented how the delay was making it difficult for his members to take care of their hospital and medical bills.
Confirming the call off, president of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled, Yaw Ofori Debrah said “we had an engagement with the common fund administrator….we had an extensive discussion on the subject and we have come to a common understanding that the intended demonstration should be called off and a stakeholders meeting will be held to find a lasting solution to the problem and for that matter we are calling off the demonstration”.
