New Zealand-born Samoa prop James Johnston has been released from his contract with Wasps after an injury-plagued six months at the club.

Johnston only made the move from Saracens in June 2015 but an injury while on international duty has meant he was unable to train and therefore make a single appearance for Wasps this season.

As a result the Premiership club have come to an agreement with the 29-year-old that will see him leave the club immediately to "pursue alternative options".

"It is unfortunate that James has not been able to train regularly since joining the club, as we were really looking forward to seeing the impact he could make in a Wasps' shirt," director of rugby Dai Young said.

"Unfortunately for both parties, this couldn't happen and he leaves with our very best wishes for his next steps."

Johnston had previously played for Saracens and Harlequins in the Premiership, making over 150 league appearances.
