Craig McMillan credits Adam Voges for taking chance

New Zealand batting coach Craig McMillan praised Australia's Adam Voges for making the most of the reprieve handed to him on day one of the first Test.

Voges was bowled by Doug Bracewell in the final over of the first day at Basin Reserve, but umpire Richard Illingworth called a no-ball.

However, replays proved the decision to be incorrect, Bracewell comfortably behind the popping crease for his delivery.

Voges made the most of the escape, hitting a sensational 239 to inspire Australia to a first-innings total of 562 on day three, and McMillan credited the 34-year-old for his opportunism.

"The focus is trying to get him out as soon as he's got the reprieve," the Black Caps' batting coach said. "Crying over spilt milk is not going to help you while you're out in the middle and he's scoring runs.

"The guy's stuck at it pretty well and he batted beautifully and he made the most of that reprieve, so fair play to him."

McMillan was pleased with the performance of opening pair Tom Latham (63) and Martin Guptill (45) for their longevity with the bat as New Zealand reached 178-4 in their second innings to trail Australia by 201 runs at the close of play.

However, the disappointing exits of Kane Williamson (22) and captain Brendon McCullum (10) means the batting coach will be looking for a tougher display in the coming days.

"They'll be disappointed with their dismissals but they batted well, for a long period," said McMillian.

"We were looking for guys to show intent and be aggressive and sometimes that goes wrong. By and large guys put together good partnerships.

"We need to reassess overnight and come back in the morning and have the bit between the teeth ready to fight hard over the next couple of days. Cricket is a funny game."
