Golden Lions suffered their first Currie Cup defeat since 2014 by losing 30-24 to Griquas in Kimberley on Saturday.

The defending champions had not been beaten in 13 Premier Division matches since going down to Western Province in the final two years ago, but they were undone by Griquas.

Akker van der Merwe took just 28 seconds to touch down the game's first try and put the Lions ahead, but AJ Coertzen and Stephan Kotze crossed to help Griquas take a 20-12 lead into half-time.

Despite having Jaco van der Walt sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes, Cyle Brink helped bring Lions back to within one point.

However, Andre Swarts added a penalty to Rudi van Rooyen's try, with Corne Fourie's late score not enough to salvage a result.
