Mexico got their FIBA Centrobasket title defence off to a winning start courtesy of a 91-83 overtime victory over the U.S. Virgin Islands in Panama City on Monday.

With the scores locked at 75-all at the end of the fourth quarter, Mexico's class shone through as they outscored the Virgin Islands 16-8 in OT.

Hector Hernandez was the top performer for defending champions Mexico, scoring 23 points and adding 14 rebounds in a double-double performance.

Puerto Rico - 10 time winners of the tournament - went down in their 2016 opener as they lost 86-64 to Panama, with the hosts following up from their 55-point win over Antigua and Barbuda.

The Bahamas atoned for their opening-game loss with a 82-58 win over Costa Rica.

Meanwhile, Nicaragua got the better of Antigua and Barbuda 74-62.
