England coach Bayliss delighted by Hales' ODI form

Trevor Bayliss praised Alex Hales for his recovery from a disappointing Test series to top England's one-day batting charts against South Africa.

Hales struggled in the longest form of the game with only 136 runs at an average of 17 across the five matches, but turned on the style in the 50-over format.

The 27-year-old scored 383 runs at the top of the order in the ODI contest, going past 50 in every match and hitting 112 in the final game in Cape Town on Sunday.

Hales' efforts were unable to help England take the series – South Africa completed a 3-2 win at Newlands – but Bayliss was delighted with his return to form.

"Hales I thought batted extremely well," he told Sky Sports.

"He was disappointed with the number of runs he scored [in the Test series] so to come back the way he did with five times over 50 and pretty much two hundreds it's a fantastic effort.

"He's been working hard in the nets and it's a credit to him.

"I think in Test cricket he was maybe a little bit caught in two minds how to play, whether to play his natural game playing shots [or not] and probably looked a bit tentative at different times and in two minds.

"In the one-day game he knew what his role was and what his plans were. He stuck to it and batted very well."
