Lancashire have confirmed England's Jos Buttler fractured his left thumb batting against Worcestershire on Friday.

The wicketkeeper missed out on a place in England's squad for the first Test with Pakistan despite coach Trevor Bayliss hinting at a return for the 25-year-old - who has not played a five-day contest since defeat to the same side in the second Test in the United Arab Emirates last October.

But his status for the one-day series with Pakistan, which starts on August 24, is in doubt after sustaining a small fracture in Lancashire's T20 Blast game at New Road.

Buttler hit 57 off 22 balls in that encounter as Lancashire prevailed, demonstrating strong form in limited-overs once again having scored 73 in England's lone T20 with Sri Lanka as well as 93 in the tied first ODI between the two teams.
