Fast-starting Catalans hold off Wakefield fightback

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats were left to rue a dismal start after going down 42-28 to Catalans Dragons in Sunday's sole Super League fixture.

The Dragons have traditionally struggled to pick up points away from their Perpignan home, but were given the perfect opportunity to record a first away win of the campaign as the Wildcats conceded five tries inside the first half-hour at Belle Vue.

Wakefield came roaring back and trailed by just four points when Tom Johnstone crossed for their fourth try with 28 minutes remaining.

However, Richie Myler crossed to give the visitors breathing space before Tony Gigot's double put the game beyond the Wildcats, who claimed a late consolation score through Mickael Simon.

A week on from scoring two tries in an impressive display against Leeds Rhinos, Dave Taylor again proved influential for Catalans together with Todd Carney.

Laurent Frayssinous' men also received a welcome boost as Remi Casty made his return after eight months on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Catalans now sit eighth in the table with four points from as many matches, while Wakefield have only one win from five outings in 2016.
