Over 2,000 killed in road accidents in 2016

According to the Commander, this figure exceeded the target of 1,364 in 2015 adding, the figure represents an increase of 5.64.

At least 2,198 lives were lost through road accidents from January 2016 to December 2016, whiles many people sustained various degrees of injury within the same period.

The Commander of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Patrick Adusei Sarpong has revealed.

According to him, this figure exceeded the target of 1,364 in 2015 adding, the figure represents an increase of 5.64.

He said, 2,951 pedestrians were knocked down in the year 2016 as against 2,121 in the year 2015.

Head of communications at the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), Kwame Atuahene, said "We were worried that we exceeded that target because for the past three years we have been experiencing a reduction in the figures of accident-related deaths."

In an interview on Accra FM, he said, "The elections, coupled with the Christmas season, resulted in brisk activities. People also drink and drive and also drive very tired. There is the need for us to remind ourselves of road safety regulations."
