The Scottish Ex-MP, Charles Kennedy has died at his home in Fort William aged 55.
Mr. Kennddy 's death was not believed to be suspicious and the cause of death has yet to be confirmed.
A statement released on behalf of his family said: "Charles was a fine man, a talented politician, and a loving father to his young son. We ask therefore that the privacy of his family is respected in the coming days.
"There will be a post-mortem and we will issue a further statement when funeral arrangements are made."
Compliments are being showered from Politicians like David Cameron, who said politics had lost a man of "immense ability", while Nick Clegg said his opposition to the Iraq war had been "enormously courageous".
Under Mr Kennedy's leadership, the Lib Dems won a record 62 seats in 2005 but he resigned eight months after the election after revealing he had been receiving treatment for a long-standing drink problem.
