Louw is regarded as one of the finest flankers in rugby union and has been an integral part of Bath's line-up since joining from Super Rugby side Stormers in 2011.

In 52 Premiership appearances, Louw has scored seven tries and the 30-year-old spoke of his delight at prolong his career at the Recreation Ground.

"I'm really excited to have extended my stay at Bath," Louw told the club's official website.

"It is a great environment to be involved in, and also, importantly, my family are very happy and settled in the city.

"Everyone is committed to improving and being the best they can be here, and I'm looking forward to the next few years and playing my part in the club's future."

Louw has earned 43 Test caps for South Africa, the most recent of which came as the Springboks defeated Argentina to clinch third place at the Rugby World Cup.

Head coach Mike Ford added: "Francois is one of the best players in the world, and we're obviously delighted that he's staying with us.

"His playing ability speaks for itself, but he also brings huge amounts of leadership, experience and intelligence to the club off the field, which are invaluable as we continue to develop."
