German auto giant first among automakers on list of top green companies

According to reports, BMW is the top automaker when it comes to being green, earning a Newsweek Green Score of 72.2 percent in the annual list released by Newsweek.

Sources reveal that second place goes to Toyota, rising 57 spots to 35th place overall with a Green Score of 69.6 percent. The third automaker to make it onto the list is Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler at 73rd place overall and a Green Score of 63.2 percent.

The list ranks the world’s largest companies on corporate sustainability and environmental impact and is conducted in partnership with Corporate Knights Capital, HIP (Human Impact + Profit) Investor Inc. and leading sustainability minds from nongovernmental organizations and the academic and accounting communities.

The evaluation was done using eight metrics to determine environmental performance with the companies being scored against their industry peers on each metric, including energy, water and waste levels.
