Ghana vs Mexico: El Tri beat Black Stars 2-0 in pre-World Cup friendly
The Ghana national team, the Black Stars, suffered a 2-0 defeat to Mexico in an international pre-World Cup friendly as El Tri delivered a dominant performance ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Mexico made a dream start to the game, taking the lead just two minutes after kick-off following a costly mistake from Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. The error gifted Mexican forward Brian Gutierrez the opportunity to curl home the opener and hand El Tri an early advantage.
The Mexicans continued to pile pressure on the Black Stars after the goal and nearly doubled their lead moments later, but Asare redeemed himself with a brilliant save to deny Mexico from close range.
Ghana’s first real opportunity arrived in the 15th minute when Felix Afena-Gyan found space inside the box, but the forward could only hit the side netting.
Mexico dominated possession throughout the opening half, controlling the tempo of the game while the Black Stars struggled to string passes together and maintain control of the ball.
El Tri thought they had scored a second goal in the 39th minute after a well-worked move ended with a towering header beating Asare, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Despite the disallowed goal, Mexico remained firmly in control and deservedly went into the break with a one-goal lead after an impressive first-half display.
After recess, Mexico continued its dominance, although Ghana showed signs of improvement. Majeed Ashimeru made a dangerous run into the box but failed to find the target, while Afena-Gyan forced the Mexican goalkeeper into a fine save with a powerful strike. Ghana also came close through another attacking move that rattled the crossbar.
Mexico eventually grabbed their second goal after a brilliant attacking run from Guillermo Martinez, who burst past the Ghana defense before calmly finishing beyond Benjamin Asare.
The Black Stars attempted to respond with several substitutions and improved ball movement, but Mexico’s defense remained composed and disciplined at the back.
Despite Ghana’s late efforts, they were unable to reduce the deficit as Mexico comfortably saw out the match to secure a 2-0 victory.
The Black Stars will now shift focus to their next pre-World Cup friendly against Wales before heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
