Priests are expected to commit to a life of celibacy in the Catholic tradition, but Reverend Father Edwin Gathang’i Waiguru, an ordained Kenyan Catholic priest has rocked the boat.

The man of God who is now married to Margaret Wanjira Githui is reported as saying that marriage should not disqualify him from continuing with his priestly duties.

“It is possible to serve God and have a family and have a lovely wife.

“God did not make a mistake when he created a man and a woman and He said it is not good for somebody to be alone,” Father Waiguru is quoted as saying.

Father Waiguru claimed that he felt compelled to get married and start a family after being assigned to preach throughout North and South America.

He decided to get married customarily upon his return to Kenya, and he and his spouse now have two children.

He said that he has now fulfilled his priesthood calling, and has now joined a splinter group, known as the Catholic Charismatic church.

“I am very happy. To my wife, I promise to love you always,” Father Waiguru said.

The wedding took place on Sunday in Kiambu country, which is located just north of Nairobi, under the direction of Bishop Patrick Mulau of the Kirinyaga Charismatic Church. Families of the couple graced the ceremony.

Father Waiguru is one of the few priests to have married contrary to the Roman Catholic tradition.
