Reed fell agonisingly short of an eagle at the par-five 18th hole, which would have moved him level atop the leaderboard, instead settling for a birdie as he finished 11 under.

That heaped the pressure on fellow American Hoffman, who needed to birdie his final hole to win, and he did exactly that for his fourth PGA Tour title.

Both Hoffman - who won for the first time since 2014 - and Reed carded final-round 69s at TPC San Antonio.

Chad Collins (69) birdied four out of his last five holes to finish solo third at 10 under.

Billy Horschel (70) - tied for third at last year's tournament - two-putted for birdie on the par-five 18th to finish in a share for fourth at nine under.

Kevin Chappell (68), Ryan Palmer (69), Martin Pillar (70) and overnight leader Ricky Barnes (74), who started the final round with a one-shot lead, also finished three shots off the pace.

Branden Grace - winner of the RBC Heritage last time out and the only non-American in the top 10 - shot a five-under 67 to vault himself into a tie for ninth at eight under.

Former world number one Luke Donald (74), J.B. Holmes (68), Brendan Steele (75) and 2014 runner-up Daniel Summerhays ended the event five shots adrift of Hoffman.
