34 secondary school students to be arraigned over violent protests

No fewer than 34 students from two schools in Ntungamo District of Uganda will be tried in court for leading violent protests in which several property were destroyed.

According to the district police commander, Hussein Niwagaba, 20 of the accused students are from Five Star High School while 14  are from St Paul's Secondary School, Rushoka.

Niwagaba said 20 the students will be arraigned on charges of malicious damage to property and assault in two separate protests last Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

He told Daily Monitor that those who partook in Five Star High School strike invaded the girls' dormitories, smashed all the glasses, removed all the doors and raped some of the girls in the nearby bushes.

"This was the worst strike I have seen in my life. All the windows were smashed, the doors were removed and everything was down," Niwagaba said.

"They went to the nearby plantations, destroyed crops and killed animals."

"These students must answer by law so that it serves as an example to the others," he added.

He noted that they also assaulted teachers and the school director, Charles Tusingwire, who had tried to intervene.
