The reoccurrence of a left shin injury means Test paceman James Pattinson will miss the remainder of the Sheffield Shield season.

Pattinson claimed six wickets in the second Test against New Zealand last month as Australia swept the Trans-Tasman series 2-0, having missed the opening match through shin soreness.

But the 25-year-old Victorian is now set for another spell on the sidelines due to bone stress in his troublesome shin, Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed on Tuesday.

"James had a recurrence of his left shin soreness following the second Test in Christchurch and had follow-up scans in Melbourne yesterday," CA physiotherapist David Beakley said in a statement.

"These scans have shown some inflammation around the shin consistent with bone stress.

"James will now require some time off to allow this injury to resolve and will not be available for the remainder of the domestic cricket season."
