Jansrud snatches World Cup combined win from Svindal

Aksel Lund Svindal missed the chance to cut Marcel Hirscher's FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup overall lead to 65 points as Norwegian compatriot Kjetil Jansrud snatched victory in the alpine combined in Wengen.

Lund Svindal went into Friday's event trailing Hirscher - looking to win the overall title for a fifth straight season - by 165 points

He looked set to close in on the Austrian in the standings after going quickest in the downhill run in Switzerland with a time of one minute and 48.10 seconds.

Adrien Theaux - winner of the most recent downhill in Santa Caterina - and Hannes Reichelt were second and third respectively, with Jansrud 0.90secs off the pace in fourth after losing time in the final two sections.

But Jansrud overturned the deficit in the slalom with a time of 48.61secs as Svindal - who went down in 49.55secs - missed out by just 0.04secs.

Theaux (+0.13secs) took the final spot on the podium with Thomas Mermillod-Blondin (+0.28secs) and Dominik Paris (+0.49secs) rounding off the top five.

"You're at the start and you try and push it. That's what I did, you have to be aggressive going in, but I never know what to expect," Jansrud said.

"I think I pulled of a pretty good run on the top and the middle section [of the slalom] and suddenly I kicked off in the last third there and I felt like I wasn't going to save it, but somehow I found my new outside ski and managed to fight my way to the bottom.

"That made me quite surprised when I came in and saw the green light, so that was a happy moment. It's pretty sweet."

Hirscher heads the overall standings with 801 points, with Svindal in second on 716 and third-placed Henrik Kristoffersen has 571.

Meanwhile, Jansrud's win strengthens his grip on fourth, moving him onto 511, 161 points clear of Felix Neureuther.
