Jimmie Johnson ties Dale Earnhardt with Atlanta NASCAR win
Jimmie Johnson's win at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday was more than just a triumph that punched his ticket to the Chase, it was a milestone victory that tied the six-time champion with NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt for the seventh-most wins in Cup history.
Johnson now has 76 wins in 509 races, compared to Senior's 76 victories in 676 races. While Johnson, 40, tied Earnhardt in wins, he has a long way to go to match his overall statistics.
Earnhardt had 281 top-five finishes and 428 top-10s while leading 25,684 laps en route to seven NASCAR Cup championships.
Johnson secured victory after pulling by from Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch in overtime after Ryan Newman brought out the caution with two laps remaining.
Johnson was ahead of Harvick by six seconds when the caution waved after a slow pit stop from Harvick put the number four driver behind by 12 seconds with 40 laps remaining.
In overtime, a big wreck occurred after Johnson passed the new overtime line, resulting in the win for Johnson.
Johnson has 208 top five finishes, 315 top-10s and 17,779 laps led in his career. He could approach Earnhardt's lifetime statistics if he decides to race for another nine years until he is 49, the same age at which Earnhardt died in a crash on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500.
