The French sixth seed appeared to sustain a leg injury when sliding to reach a ball, leaving the court for treatment while holding a 5-2 lead in the first set.

Tsonga, ranked seventh in the world, returned to the court, but walked straight over to Gulbis and shook his hand, signalling that he would be unable to continue.

Roger Federer, Gael Monfils and Rafael Nadal have also had to pull out due to injury problems.
