Johanna Konta heads into uncharted territory against Zhang Shuai at the Australian Open on Wednesday and she believes she can handle the pressure.

As the first British woman to compete in a grand slam quarter-final in 32 years, Johanna Konta is confident she can cope with the pressure at the Australian Open.

World number 47 Konta's previous best effort at a major was her fourth-round appearance at the US Open last year, but her victory over Ekaterina Makarova on Monday secured a last-eight spot at Melbourne Park.

Konta will face Chinese qualifier Zhang Shuai, who has proved to be the story of the tournament so far in knocking out the likes of second seed Simona Halep and 15th seed Madison Keys en route to the quarters.

The last British woman to reach the last eight of a grand slam was Jo Durie at Wimbledon in 1984, and Konta believes she can keep her cool against Zhang, whose record in majors before this tournament read 0-14.

"I think it's about becoming just very strong in that belief, that whatever happens, I can handle it. That's what you keep taking with you," Konta said.

"When you're able to relate back, when you think back to being in certain situations and you have little replays in your mind - I've been here, I've been in a similar situation - I guess you take comfort from that.

"No matter how uncomfortable or how hard or how difficult it gets, the more experiences you've had, the more you realise that practically, you're going to survive it."
