Lara Gut wins giant slalom, Lindsey Vonn fails to finish

Lara Gut strengthened her grip on top spot in the overall FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup standings by winning a dramatic giant slalom event in Lienz which proved to be one to forget for Lindsey Vonn.

Gut now leads Vonn, who failed to finish the first run on Monday, by 158 points in the battle to be crowned overall champion this time around,

The 24-year-old Swiss claimed her fifth win of the calendar year in Austria, where she was 0.12 seconds quicker than second-placed Tina Weirather.

Viktoria Rebensburg completed the podium on a day that saw Ana Drev left to reflect on what might have been, having led after the first run before falling on the second.

Gut's fourth victory of the season came courtesy of a first run of one minute and 1.74 seconds, which put her in second place, and then 1:04.26 second time around was enough to put her on top of the podium once again.

Slovenian Drev was 0.2 seconds quicker than the-form Gut in the first run, but her joy proved to be short-lived as she fell and slid off the course in her second run and came away empty-handed.

Vonn paid the price for going too wide on a left turn on her first run, missing the next gate and falling further behind Gut in the overall standings.

Gut also moved to the top of the giant slalom standings by eight points, as Eva-Maria Brem could only finish fourth in her homeland.
