Franks, a two-time Rugby World Cup winner with the All Blacks, has ruptured his bicep tendon and requires surgery.

A London Irish statement read: "After discussions with the appropriate specialists, the decision has been made to surgically repair the bicep tendon. The recovery period is 12 weeks."

Franks joined Irish from Super Rugby side Hurricanes following last year's World Cup final win over Australia, in which he appeared as a second-half substitute.

Irish have struggled in the Premiership this year and are second-bottom after nine matches, having taken just eight points.
