Election of new ECOWAS chairman in limbo

West African leaders are in Accra for the 47 Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of Ecowas.

The meeting to be held on Tuesday is expected to among other discussions deliberate on the postponement of the 40anniversary of the sub-regional bloc.

Among other things to be discussed is the election of a new chairman as President John Mahama's time elapse today.

It is however unclear if there would be the election of a new chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

Media reports indicate that President Mahama would be chairing his last ECOWAS meeting today.

But the election of a new chairman was not mentioned on the agenda.

President John Mahama was elected Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States and took over from his immediate neighbour and Ivorian President Allasane Ouattara who was elected on 17 February 2012.

He was elected during the 44th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast.

One of the key issues President John Mahama superintended over was the signing of the controversial Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Union.
