Minella overcame Evgeniya Rodina 6-3 1-6 7-5 in her first-round match before shocking second Varvara Lepchenko 6-1 6-7 (4-7) 6-4.

While Lepchenko crashed out, fourth seed Nao Hibino and fifth seed Ana Konjuh defeated Ivana Jorovic and Ipek Soylu in straight sets, with seventh seed Polona Hercog drubbing Elitsa Kostova 6-1 6-0.

Elsewhere in the draw, there were wins for Stefanie Voegele, Tereza Mrdeza, Marina Erakovic and Kristina Kucova.
